What To Do if Your Pet is Having a Seizure
Cat or dog seizures are among the most frightening experiences a pet owner can go through. Your veterinarian near Houston has some important tips and insights for helping your pet to get through this traumatic incident.
Veterans Memorial Drive Animal Hospital proudly serves the greater Houston area as well as the communities of Tomball, Cypress Texas, The Woodlands, and King Wood Texas with a range of key veterinary services.
The Anatomy of Cat or Dog Seizures
Cat and dog seizures are usually quite short, lasting from 3 to 5 minutes maximum. However, to a pet owner, this time period can feel like an eternity.
While seizures can be characterized by rapid shaking and movement of the limbs, in some cases the animal will hardly seem to be moving at all. They may also move very slowly. Some may froth at the mouth or lose control of their bladder or bowels. In all cases, their behavior will be noticeable due to how strange and out of character it looks.
Keep Calm - If you determine your pet is having a seizure, don’t panic. The pet will likely pick up on strong or fearful emotions. Staying calm will help both you and your four-legged friend to get through this.
Create a Safe Zone - Gently move the pet away from any potentially hazardous items such as sharp corners, stairs or items made of glass.
Comfort Your Pet - Stay close to your pet and talk in soothing tones until the seizure is over. Keep your fingers away from their teeth and mouth just in case they make a sudden movement. You may touch or pet them gently if they seem to be responsive to this. Your calming presence will help tremendously.
After the Seizure
Your pet should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible after the seizure to determine the root cause. If the seizure was under 5 minutes long, it may not be an emergency situation. However, if the seizure was longer than 5 minutes or your pet experiences “cluster seizures” (more than one seizure within one day), your pet should be taken to the animal hospital immediately.
